Express Entry, Canada’s new economic immigration model

Express Entry has caused much fear and anxiety among people wishing to immigrate to Canada. The result of the system however is providing well qualified individuals with a fast and open immigration stream. It is important to note that all previous immigration programs, ie. Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades and Canadian Experience Class are still open and unchanged. Express Entry is a processing model for how to process applications under these streams.

This is the general procedure of that all candidates take to enter into the Express Entry system. The first step is to fill out an Express Entry profile to enter into the pool of candidates. If your point score is high enough you will receive an Invitation to Apply for Permanent Residency. IMPORTANT Immigration and Citizenship of Canada is updating the Express Entry system:

  • you can now earn additional points for study in Canada
  • a valid job offer now only needs to be for one year, and some job offers no longer need an LMIA
  • the amount of points you get for a job offer has changed
  • you now have 90 days to apply instead of 60.
